How Can I Keep My Audience?Did I ever tell you about the time I was in an elevator with Winona Ryder and the elevator got stuck and all her clothes fell off? No? Well, I am not going to tell you now (because it didn’t happen). But I AM going to tell you about how the first few lines of your post are going to determine if someone reads it or not. And also how to help you make sure your opening makes people keep reading.

Over at the Superficial Gallery we understand that people are busy, and that reading words gets in the way of them staring into space and looking at pictures. So if you are going to INSIST on writing words, remember that people get bored fast. You are probably bored right now, but pay attention! People have more choices than they should, and if you are going to make them choose you, you have to hit them with what you are offering in the first few lines. If you don’t, then you could lose them. Now, of course, they already went to your page, so you could say you don’t care. But that is dumb. You want them to come back, right? They won’t if you are boring.

Here are the three things I recommend for you.

  • Don’t start your post with a lot of cutesy crap about your cat or your breakfast or what you are doing later. Unless that is your gimmick, then nobody cares. If you have to put it in, put it at the end.
  • Try to give people the entire point of your post in the first paragraph. If you are going to do a lot of explaining later, then do it later. In the beginning, tell them the point you will be explaining. That’s what’s going to keep them.
  • Make sure you remember why YOU thought your post was interesting, and write it down. If you are writing about something you thought was cool - then make sure you tell people what is so cool about it. If your readers are into the same things you are - then just think about what would make YOU read the post.

So - to sum up - you don’t have very long to hook a reader. Use those few lines at the top of your post wisely. You have good things to say; make sure you don’t lose people before you get to tell them.

Message from Carl: Great post Acadia, this is something that I don’t really think about hard when I’m writing and I will do in the future.
