When Not To Write A Blog Post
Posted on March 19th, 2008 in Blogging Tips |
I’ve learnt from mistakes that I’ve done whilst blogging so I thought I’d share why I wouldn’t post in the following circumstances. Doing so affects the quality of your writing and you’ll look back once on it a day later and I can guarantee there will be ways to improve it!
Tired
This is one I’ve experienced quite a lot. I try my hardest to finish writing posts and timestamp them for the week and I can be up to the early hours of the morning making sure they are ready. It’s not healthy and you should make sure you tell yourself to stop if you need sleep, you will be able to write better in the morning.
Writing Another Post
Are you trying to work on two posts at once? It will confuse you and you’ll get your two thoughts mixed up whilst writing. Take one post at a time.
Empty Stomach
This is one that affects me quite a lot. I need to be content that I’ve had enough food and I will not have random thoughts of doughnuts or my favourite food popping into my head disrupting my chain of thought.
Rushing
If your rushing because you have to go out you shouldn’t be writing. You won’t be able to think clearly and you’ll just be writing for the sake of it and getting words down. They won’t be of quality that you could produce when you come back.
Doing Other Things
Are you working on another project whilst writing? Coding a web page or cleaning your room for example? Get those tasks done first and then concentrate on writing or do it the other way round, it’s up to you.
Toilet
This one is pretty obvious that you should make sure you don’t want to go to the toilet. Do you think you won’t have what you want to write in your mind when you come back? Think you can hold it until your done? It’s best all round to go and come back, you’ll feel more comfortable.
Frustrated
If you’re angry for one reason or another, don’t write. You haven’t got a clear head and you’ll just be thinking about what is causing you problems. Sort the problem out, the writing can be done later.
Can you think of any other times you wouldn’t write?

one thing I have done but will try not to ever do again is writing a post when I really did not feel like writing. The post will only turn out to be aweful, boring and dull and chase people away!

interesting post
Nice article. I chuckled when you mentioned the toilet.
It’s funny how this will override any intelligent thought.
Another one to add to the list is when you are sick and not feeling well. It’s hard to write a good post when you are on cold medicine.

great points. i find it really hard to write posts when I’m distracted by something else. So I usually have to stop writing and go and do whatever I need to do, then come back and write.

These are some good ideas for when to take a break from blogging. You could probably add something like “while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs” to the list. Although I have never been faced with this situation personally, I could imagine someone under the influence publishing material that they might regret later.
Thanks for commenting,
These are points that I’ve experienced so I wouldn’t have added under the influence of alcohol or drugs quite yet and hopefully not in the future. I could imagine someone would regret it later though. It’s always important to have a clear mind.
Best Wishes

Yup, very true! Things do not end up going very well if you post when you are under all of the above circumstances. I have been there myself.
