Preparing to Make Your Post
Posted on February 26th, 2008 in Blogging Tips |

When you write a blog post, do you just start writing? Or do you constructively manage your time to get the most out of the topic your writing about. Writing your blog post straight off is sometimes less beneficial than you may think. As I have experienced in the past, taking your time in writing a blog post is well worth it. You have more time to gather your thoughts together, look around the web for things you want to add into it. I have some steps I take to make sure I’m ready to make a post and making sure I’m happy with what I’m writing about.
Adding to Existing Ideas
I recently read a post about ‘Repackaging Ideas‘. This is an important part of what this post is trying to help you with. It is important to keep track of what is going on around the blogosphere and what others are posting about. Try checking other blogs that are writing about similar ideas you are. If you find a post on the same topic as yours, don’t copy it, remember what they have written about it and add your own points to it and present it in your own way. Remember to make your own research and try to find as much information on a topic as you can, people love reading blogs for quality content and if you hold the many answers or advice they look for then they will return.
Find Some Links
If you are writing about a certain topic, try adding links to other blogs that have written something similar to yours. If you have another point tucked in their somewhere you can add a link to a different blog’s post that is related to that to. If the blog you link to displays trackbacks then you will be exposing your article to people who read their post. Once they have finished reading the other blog they may look for other similar posts with different writing and ideas. It just so happens that you would have linked to it and they will see your link and click it.
Plan your Sub-Headings with Ideas that come into Your Head
A key step in writing my posts is writing my sub-headings before I do anything else. I start to think about what I am going to write and any ideas that pop into my head I make a sub-heading out of them. For example in this post ‘Find some Links’ is a sub-heading I got from just thinking about linking. I find that personally this is a great way of organising things as you have your sub-heading’s ready and you just have to write under them.
Add a Picture
I regularly search the internet and find a picture I am allowed to use. I go to stock photography websites and look around for pictures that are related to what I am writing about or I use my own photos. Using photos is a great way to relax someone when they are reading as it’s like a breath from reading. Sometimes just reading continuous text without a picture break can be a little dull. Although saying this, I do not mean there should be a picture in every post you do.
Proofreading
This is another thing I wanted to add for when people read this post, it is important to try to check your spelling and grammar to the best of your ability. Many people argue over whether spelling and grammar make a blog any worse, but if your readers can’t understand you then they probably won’t return. Try running your article through a word processor, this is the step I take. Remember no one is perfect, so if you make a mistake, just correct it without anyone even noticing. ![]()
